This is the unique original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi.

Jacques Cartier (inset) sailed up the St Lawrence in a vain attempt to find a route to Cathay - and instead earned himself the title of "Father of Canada".

Walking alone on the shore shortly before his departure for France, Cartier found the once-friendly Indians confronting him angrily. They thought, correctly as it turned out, that Cartier was planning to abduct their chief.

This is the original artwork for illustrations on pages 8-9 of Look and Learn issue no 865 (12 August 1978).
