This is the unique original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi.

Carthage Must Be Destroyed. Again and again Marcus Porcius Cato reminded his Senate colleagues that Rome would never be safe while Carthage remained (see insert). He always ended his speeches - whatever the subject - with the terrible words "Delenda est Carthago".

Renowned as an orator, the veteran senator's speeches made a deep impression on the Romans. After two years of failure, Rome appointed Scipio Aemilianus to lead the assault on Carthage. He succeeded with a ruthlessness which still shocks to this day.

This is the original artwork from Look and Learn 3rd November 1979.
