This is the unique original Gouache painting by Graham Coton.

President Nasser of Egypt nationalised the Suez Canal in 1956. In order to stop an Anglo-French invasion by sea, Egypt sank all the ships in the Suez Canal and blockaded it.

The canal was strategically important; it provided the shortest ocean link between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. The canal eased commerce for trading nations and particularly helped European colonial powers to gain and govern their colonies.
