This is the unique original Gouache painting by Ken Petts.

No prison seemed to be able to hold robber Jack Sheppard (4 March 1702 – 16 November 1724), a formidable escapologist. However he couldn't stop himself from boasting while drunk.

As a result he was captured by a constable who only arrived in a London tavern to sort out a noisy drunk. It was only a week later, during which time his Newgate cell had been manned by warders every moment; he was giving a cheery wave to over 200,000 onlookers as he stepped up to the gallows.

This painting was the cover to Look and Learn issue 838 published 4th February 1978.
